How To be Legally Married in Edinburgh

If you are getting married in Edinburgh, or Scotland, you can choose to be married in a civil, religious or belief marriage. You can choose the type of ceremony that feels right for you and be married by a celebrant with values and beliefs that mirror your own. The great news is that a wedding celebrant can marry you anywhere. Be sure to check your celebrant is authorised to solemnise marriage in Scotland – in other words that they can legally marry you. Someone like me!

If you wish to be legally married in Edinburgh or Scotland it’s important to know the procedure:

  • You’ll each need to submit an M10 Marriage Notice form and any supporting paperwork to the registrar nearest your wedding venue.
  • The earliest you can submit your M10 Marriage Notice form is 12 weeks before your wedding day. The cut off for submitting the paperwork is 29 days before your wedding.
  • Your celebrant should advise you on the process – but it is your responsibility as the couple being married to ensure you submit the correct paperwork within the timescales.
  • If you are travelling to Scotland to be married from outside the UK you may also need to apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa.
  • If you are a non-UK national you should also complete a Declaration of Status by Non-UK Nationals
